The Penitent Man
A pre-Imperial opera of unknown origin.
The Impresario recently orchestrated a performance of part one and has now acquired and is busy translating part two.
There might be something weird going on with it.
A mother, terrified of her daughter’s erratic and dangerous magic, seals her away; the child is maddened by the isolation while the mother goes slowly insane from guilt. Finally the father, who thought his daughter was dead, must choose between freeing his powerful but unstable daughter and leaving her imprisoned alone and in darkness. The first part ends without indicating which choice he made.
