Goat Hair Tent
Come to the Oasis Dakhla and meet actual bedouins residing still near their old traditions and way of life. Possibly because of Hollywood films, bad novels and inaccurate articles, the Western world long thought of—and should, even in 1966—the Arab world in terms of black tents, without both appreciating the virtues of the life symbolized by the black tent or realizing that in Saudi Arabia, and most locations in the Center East, the black tent is little more than a remnant of a previous that has given solution to the wants of the current.
They were—and still are even in an age when recognition of camping has introduced forth dozens of recent, efficient, transportable shelters—a marvelous adaptation of easy materials to stringent necessities: they needed to be straightforward and fast to erect, light, portable, wind and water-resistant, ethereal, insulated against the sun's rays, easy to take care of and repair, and preferably good-looking.
The whole operation, honed to perfection by centuries of observe, went in line with a drill as inflexible as a army maneuver, with the head of the household acting as high sergeant: "Spread out the tent, my folks," he would cry, and then, "Stretch out the ropes, children," and so forth through the whole litany till the final, "Spread out the carpet and the dazcashek (mattresses) and prepare the men's and ladies's parts of the tent." It was achieved with remarkable dispatch and when the furnishings had been laid out the family was able to obtain guests.
The grasp's rifle, as an example, was at all times hung on the tent pole of the visitor chamber (which in Eastern Arabia was all the time on the east facet of the tent), the fireside was built in the actual heart of the same "room," and the row of three coffee pots was ranged alongside the hearth, along with the coffee roaster, the wooden tray for cooling the new coffee beans, the espresso grinder, the incense burner and the host's camel saddle, in case a guest wanted a again relaxation.
The family, kids, parents and grandparents, all resided in a single tent. Goat hair tent products are most popular in Africa, Mid East, and Western Europe. In winter when it is cold outdoors our tent stays comfortably warm with just a small fire. The tent of a person was a spot of rest and protection from the elements. Within the cities of Saudi Arabia at this time, as in most cities of the Middle East, the skylines are altering.
